Vrede masse-demonstrationer i Israel over ultra-ortodokse jøders fremturen
Israels præsident, Shimon Peres, gik i spidsen, da henved 15.000
mennesker tirsdag gik i demonstration i Jerusalem. Shimon Peres's og de
andre demonstranters vrede var rettet mod de utra-ortodokse jøders
fremturen, som er ved at blive et større og større problem i Israel.
"De ultra-ortodokse er skøre - og er akkurat lige så slemme som de fanatiske muslimer i Iran", siger en demonstrant til CNN.
De ultra-ortodokses fremfærd har i de seneste antaget mange former, og

jøder, da politiet ville fjerne skilte, der krævede adskillelse af
kvinder og mænd ved offentlige forsamlinger.
Den amerikanske immigrant Ayelet Wortman er en af dem, som har fortalt,
hvad mange israelske kvinder har oplevet: Hun slentrede hen ad gaden i
Israel sent på eftermiddagen, da en tilsløret ortodoks jøde greb fat i
hende bagfra, rev hendes trøje i stykker og kaldte hende en luder.
- Vi løb hele vejen hjem efter overfaldet, siger den nu 18-årige kvinde.
Blandt deltagerne i tirsdagens demonstration var altså Israels
præsident, Shimon Peres, der i kraftige vendinger kritiserer
ultraortodokse jøder:
- Dette er prøve for nationen, siger Shimon Peres. Vi må alle, hvad
enten vi er religiøse, sekulære eller traditionelle, stå sammen for at
forsvare statens karakter mod et mindretal, der ødelægger vor nationale
solidaritet. Det afgørende er at fastslå, at Israel er en demokratisk,
vestlig og liberal stat. Det offentlige rum er for alle, og sådan skal
det blive ved med at være.
Kvinder i Israel har tidligere klaget over, at de ofte bliver tvunget
til at side bagest i busserne i de byer, hvor der lever mange ortodokse
jøder, og mange ultraortodokse undgår alle former for offentlig kontakt
mellem de to køn - og samtidig lever de efter strenge regler om, at der
kun må vises så lidt bar hud som overhovedet muligt.
Ortodokse jøder udgør cirka 10 procent af Israels 7,7 millioner
indbyggere. Men deres høje fødselsrate og koordinering af stemmer i
forbindelse med valg har sikret dem velfærdsfordele og større
indflydelse.

Israel accepterer Kvartettens opfordring til fredsforhandlinger
Israel accepted on Sunday a call by international mediators to
resume peace talks with the Palestinians, who quickly reaffirmed their
refusal to negotiate. "Israel welcomes the Quartet call for direct
negotiations between the parties without preconditions," the statement
